داود

Dawud (David)

The King-Prophet with the Psalms

A king, prophet, and warrior, Dawud was given the Zabur (Psalms) and mountains and birds joined him in praise of Allah (Surah Sad 38:17-20).

The Young Warrior Who Defeated Jalut (Goliath)

When Talut (Saul) led the Children of Israel against the forces of Jalut (Goliath), it was the young Dawud who killed the mighty warrior (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:251). Allah gave Dawud kingship and wisdom and taught him what He willed. This event marks the rise of Dawud from a humble soldier to a divinely appointed leader — proving that Allah grants authority to whomever He chooses, not based on lineage or wealth but on faith and courage.

Surah Al-Baqarah 2:251

The Zabur (Psalms) — A Book of Praise

Allah gave Dawud (peace be upon him) the Zabur (Surah An-Nisa 4:163). The mountains were made to glorify Allah with him in the evening and at sunrise, and the birds were assembled, all joining in praise (Surah Sad 38:18-19). This is a remarkable image — creation itself harmonising with a prophet in worship. The Zabur was a scripture of devotion and remembrance, centred on praising Allah.

Surah Sad 38:18-19

Mastery of Iron — A Gift for Justice

Allah made iron soft for Dawud and instructed him to make coats of armour, balancing the links carefully (Surah Saba 34:10-11). This practical gift served both military and civilian purposes. Dawud was not just a spiritual leader — he worked with his hands. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'The best food a man eats is that which he earns by the work of his own hands, and the Prophet of Allah, Dawud, used to eat from the earnings of his own hands' (Sahih al-Bukhari 2072).

Surah Saba 34:10-11

The Test of Judgement — Humility Before Allah

Allah tested Dawud with a case involving two disputants who climbed over the wall of his private chamber (Surah Sad 38:21-24). After hearing the case, Dawud realised he was being tested and immediately fell in prostration, seeking forgiveness. Allah forgave him, and affirmed his status: 'We have made you a vicegerent upon the earth, so judge between the people in truth' (Surah Sad 38:26). This episode teaches that even kings and prophets must remain humble and self-aware.

Surah Sad 38:21-26

Lessons from Prophet Dawud (David)

1

True authority comes from Allah and must be exercised with justice and humility.

2

Working with your own hands is honourable — even a king-prophet earned his livelihood through manual labour.

3

Worship is not limited to prayer — the mountains and birds glorified Allah alongside Dawud.

4

When you realise a mistake, turn to Allah immediately in repentance; do not delay.
