Verse 6of 73

ٱلنَّبِىُّ أَوْلَىٰ بِٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ مِنْ أَنفُسِهِمْ ۖ وَأَزْوَٰجُهُۥٓ أُمَّهَٰتُهُمْ ۗ وَأُو۟لُوا۟ ٱلْأَرْحَامِ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلَىٰ بِبَعْضٍۢ فِى كِتَٰبِ ٱللَّهِ مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَٱلْمُهَٰجِرِينَ إِلَّآ أَن تَفْعَلُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰٓ أَوْلِيَآئِكُم مَّعْرُوفًۭا ۚ كَانَ ذَٰلِكَ فِى ٱلْكِتَٰبِ مَسْطُورًۭا﴿٦

Translation (Sahih International)

The Prophet is more worthy of the believers than themselves, and his wives are [in the position of] their mothers. And those of [blood] relationship are more entitled [to inheritance] in the decree of Allah than the [other] believers and the emigrants, except that you may do to your close associates a kindness [through bequest]. That was in the Book inscribed.

Word-by-word meaning

ٱلنَّبِىُّal-nabiyuThe Prophet
أَوْلَىٰawlā(is) closer
بِٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَbil-mu'minīnato the believers
مِنْminthan
أَنفُسِهِمْ ۖanfusihimtheir own selves
وَأَزْوَٰجُهُۥٓwa-azwājuhuand his wives
أُمَّهَـٰتُهُمْ ۗummahātuhum(are) their mothers
وَأُو۟لُوا۟wa-ulūAnd possessors
ٱلْأَرْحَامِl-arḥāmi(of) relationships
بَعْضُهُمْbaʿḍuhumsome of them
أَوْلَىٰawlā(are) closer
بِبَعْضٍۢbibaʿḍinto another
فِىin
كِتَـٰبِkitābi(the) Decree
ٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allah
مِنَminathan
ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَl-mu'minīnathe believers
وَٱلْمُهَـٰجِرِينَwal-muhājirīnaand the emigrants
إِلَّآillāexcept
أَنanthat
تَفْعَلُوٓا۟tafʿalūyou do
إِلَىٰٓilāto
أَوْلِيَآئِكُمawliyāikumyour friends
مَّعْرُوفًۭا ۚmaʿrūfana kindness
كَانَkānaThat is
ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThat is
فِىin
ٱلْكِتَـٰبِl-kitābithe Book
مَسْطُورًۭاmasṭūranwritten

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

Loyalty to the Prophet ; and his wives are Mothers of the BelieversAllah tells us how His Messenger is merciful and sincere towards his Ummah, and how he is closer to them than they are to themselves. His judgement or ruling takes precedence over their own choices for themselves, as Allah says:فَلاَ وَرَبِّكَ لاَ يُؤْمِنُونَ حَتَّى يُحَكِّمُوكَ فِيمَا شَجَرَ بَيْنَهُمْ ثُمَّ لاَ يَجِدُواْ فِى أَنفُسِهِمْ حَرَجاً مِّمَّا قَضَيْتَ وَيُسَلِّمُواْ تَسْلِيماً(But no, by your Lord, they can have no fa...
