Verse 27of 165

وَلَوْ تَرَىٰٓ إِذْ وُقِفُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلنَّارِ فَقَالُوا۟ يَٰلَيْتَنَا نُرَدُّ وَلَا نُكَذِّبَ بِـَٔايَٰتِ رَبِّنَا وَنَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ﴿٢٧

Translation (Sahih International)

If you could but see when they are made to stand before the Fire and will say, "Oh, would that we could be returned [to life on earth] and not deny the signs of our Lord and be among the believers."

Word-by-word meaning

وَلَوْwalawAnd if
تَرَىٰٓtarāyou (could) see
إِذْidhwhen
وُقِفُوا۟wuqifūthey are made to stand
عَلَىʿalāby
ٱلنَّارِl-nārithe Fire
فَقَالُوا۟faqālūthen they (will) say
يَـٰلَيْتَنَاyālaytanāOh! Would that we
نُرَدُّnuradduwere sent back
وَلَاwalāand not
نُكَذِّبَnukadhibawe would deny
بِـَٔايَـٰتِbiāyāti(the) Signs
رَبِّنَاrabbinā(of) our Lord
وَنَكُونَwanakūnaand we would be
مِنَminaamong
ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَl-mu'minīnathe believers

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

Wishes and Hopes Do Not Help One When He Sees the TormentAllah mentions the condition of the disbelievers when they are made to stand before the Fire on the Day of Resurrection and witness its chains and restraints, along with seeing the horrible, momentous conditions in the Fire with their own eyes.
