Verse 2of 75

إِنَّمَا ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ٱلَّذِينَ إِذَا ذُكِرَ ٱللَّهُ وَجِلَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ وَإِذَا تُلِيَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ ءَايَٰتُهُۥ زَادَتْهُمْ إِيمَٰنًۭا وَعَلَىٰ رَبِّهِمْ يَتَوَكَّلُونَ﴿٢﴾

Translation (Sahih International)

The believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, their hearts become fearful, and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith; and upon their Lord they rely -

Word-by-word meaning

إِنَّمَاinnamāOnly
ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَl-mu'minūnathe believers
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīna(are) those who

ذُكِرَdhukirais mentioned
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
وَجِلَتْwajilatfeel fear
قُلُوبُهُمْqulūbuhumtheir hearts
وَإِذَاwa-idhāand when
تُلِيَتْtuliyatare recited
عَلَيْهِمْʿalayhimto them
ءَايَـٰتُهُۥāyātuhuHis Verses
زَادَتْهُمْzādathumthey increase them
إِيمَـٰنًۭاīmānan(in) faith
وَعَلَىٰwaʿalāand upon
رَبِّهِمْrabbihimtheir Lord
يَتَوَكَّلُونَyatawakkalūnathey put their trust

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

Qualities of the Faithful and Truthful Believers`Ali bin Abi Talhah reported that Ibn `Abbas said about the Ayah,إِنَّمَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ الَّذِينَ إِذَا ذُكِرَ اللَّهُ وَجِلَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ(The believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, feel a fear in their hearts)"None of Allah's remembrance enters the hearts of the hypocrites upon performing what He has ordained.
