Al-Anfal (The Spoils of War)

Verse 7of 75

وَإِذْ يَعِدُكُمُ ٱللَّهُ إِحْدَى ٱلطَّآئِفَتَيْنِ أَنَّهَا لَكُمْ وَتَوَدُّونَ أَنَّ غَيْرَ ذَاتِ ٱلشَّوْكَةِ تَكُونُ لَكُمْ وَيُرِيدُ ٱللَّهُ أَن يُحِقَّ ٱلْحَقَّ بِكَلِمَٰتِهِۦ وَيَقْطَعَ دَابِرَ ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ﴿٧﴾

Translation (Sahih International)

[Remember, O believers], when Allah promised you one of the two groups - that it would be yours - and you wished that the unarmed one would be yours. But Allah intended to establish the truth by His words and to eliminate the disbelievers

Word-by-word meaning

وَإِذْwa-idhAnd when
يَعِدُكُمُyaʿidukumupromised you
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
إِحْدَىiḥ'dāone
ٱلطَّآئِفَتَيْنِl-ṭāifatayni(of) the two groups
أَنَّهَاannahāthat it (would be)
لَكُمْlakumfor you
وَتَوَدُّونَwatawaddūnaand you wished
أَنَّannathat
غَيْرَghayra(one) other than
ذَاتِdhātithat
ٱلشَّوْكَةِl-shawkati(of) the armed
تَكُونُtakūnuwould be
لَكُمْlakumfor you
وَيُرِيدُwayurīduBut intended
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
أَنanto
يُحِقَّyuḥiqqajustify
ٱلْحَقَّl-ḥaqathe truth
بِكَلِمَـٰتِهِۦbikalimātihiby His words
وَيَقْطَعَwayaqṭaʿaand cut off
دَابِرَdābira(the) roots
ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَl-kāfirīna(of) the disbelievers

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

Following the Messenger is Better for the BelieversAllah said,كَمَآ أَخْرَجَكَ رَبُّكَ(As your Lord caused you to go out...) After Allah described the believers as fearing their Lord, resolving matters of dispute between themselves and obeying Allah and His Messenger , He then said here, "since you disputed about dividing war spoils and differed with each other about them, Allah took them away from you.
