Verse 50of 69

وَقَالُوا۟ لَوْلَآ أُنزِلَ عَلَيْهِ ءَايَٰتٌۭ مِّن رَّبِّهِۦ ۖ قُلْ إِنَّمَا ٱلْءَايَٰتُ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ وَإِنَّمَآ أَنَا۠ نَذِيرٌۭ مُّبِينٌ﴿٥٠

Translation (Sahih International)

But they say, "Why are not signs sent down to him from his Lord?" Say, "The signs are only with Allah, and I am only a clear warner."

Word-by-word meaning

وَقَالُوا۟waqālūAnd they say
لَوْلَآlawlāWhy not
أُنزِلَunzilaare sent down
عَلَيْهِʿalayhito him
ءَايَـٰتٌۭāyātun(the) Signs
مِّنminfrom
رَّبِّهِۦ ۖrabbihihis Lord
قُلْqulSay
إِنَّمَاinnamāOnly
ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتُl-āyātuthe Signs
عِندَʿinda(are) with
ٱللَّهِl-lahiAllah
وَإِنَّمَآwa-innamāand only
أَنَا۠anāI (am)
نَذِيرٌۭnadhīruna warner
مُّبِينٌmubīnunclear

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

The Idolators' demand for Signs, and the ResponseAllah tells us how the idolators stubbornly demanded signs, meaning that they wanted signs to show them that Muhammad was indeed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, just as Salih was given the sign of the she-camel.
