Al-Ankabut (The Spider)

Verse 53of 69

وَيَسْتَعْجِلُونَكَ بِٱلْعَذَابِ ۚ وَلَوْلَآ أَجَلٌۭ مُّسَمًّۭى لَّجَآءَهُمُ ٱلْعَذَابُ وَلَيَأْتِيَنَّهُم بَغْتَةًۭ وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ﴿٥٣﴾

Translation (Sahih International)

And they urge you to hasten the punishment. And if not for [the decree of] a specified term, punishment would have reached them. But it will surely come to them suddenly while they perceive not.

Word-by-word meaning

وَيَسْتَعْجِلُونَكَwayastaʿjilūnakaAnd they ask you to hasten
بِٱلْعَذَابِ ۚbil-ʿadhābi[with] the punishment
وَلَوْلَآwalawlāAnd if not
أَجَلٌۭajalun(for) a term
مُّسَمًّۭىmusammanappointed
لَّجَآءَهُمُlajāahumusurely (would) have come to them
ٱلْعَذَابُl-ʿadhābuthe punishment
وَلَيَأْتِيَنَّهُمwalayatiyannahumBut it will surely come to them
بَغْتَةًۭbaghtatansuddenly
وَهُمْwahumwhile they
لَاlā(do) not
يَشْعُرُونَyashʿurūnaperceive

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

How the Idolators asked for the Torment to be hastened onAllah tells us of the ignorance of the idolators and how they asked for the punishment of Allah to be hastened so that it would befall them quickly.
