Al-A'raf (The Heights)

Verse 40of 206

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا وَٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟ عَنْهَا لَا تُفَتَّحُ لَهُمْ أَبْوَٰبُ ٱلسَّمَآءِ وَلَا يَدْخُلُونَ ٱلْجَنَّةَ حَتَّىٰ يَلِجَ ٱلْجَمَلُ فِى سَمِّ ٱلْخِيَاطِ ۚ وَكَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ﴿٤٠﴾

Translation (Sahih International)

Indeed, those who deny Our verses and are arrogant toward them - the gates of Heaven will not be opened for them, nor will they enter Paradise until a camel enters into the eye of a needle. And thus do We recompense the criminals.

Word-by-word meaning

أَبْوَٰبُabwābu(the) doors
ٱلسَّمَآءِl-samāi(of) the heaven

ٱلْجَنَّةَl-janataParadise
حَتَّىٰḥattāuntil
يَلِجَyalijapasses
ٱلْجَمَلُl-jamaluthe camel
فِىfīthrough
سَمِّsammi(the) eye
ٱلْخِيَاطِ ۚl-khiyāṭi(of) the needle
وَكَذَٰلِكَwakadhālikaAnd thus
نَجْزِىnajzīWe recompense
ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَl-muj'rimīnathe criminals

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

Doors of Heaven shall not open for Those Who deny Allah's Ayat, and They shall never enter ParadiseAllah said,لاَ تُفَتَّحُ لَهُمْ أَبْوَبُ السَّمَآءِ(for them the gates of the heavens will not be opened,) meaning, their good deeds and supplication will not ascend through it, according to Mujahid, Sa`id bin Jubayr and Ibn `Abbas, as Al-`Awfi and `Ali bin Abi Talhah reported from him. Ath-Thawri narrated that, Layth said that `Ata' narrated this from Ibn `Abbas.
