Al-Baqarah (The Cow)

Verse 81of 286

بَلَىٰ مَن كَسَبَ سَيِّئَةًۭ وَأَحَٰطَتْ بِهِۦ خَطِيٓـَٔتُهُۥ فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلنَّارِ ۖ هُمْ فِيهَا خَٰلِدُونَ﴿٨١

Translation (Sahih International)

Yes, whoever earns evil and his sin has encompassed him - those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally.

Word-by-word meaning

بَلَىٰbalāYes

سَيِّئَةًۭsayyi-atanevil
وَأَحَـٰطَتْwa-aḥāṭatand surrounded him
بِهِۦbihiwith
خَطِيٓـَٔتُهُۥkhaṭīatuhuhis sins
فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَfa-ulāika[so] those
أَصْحَـٰبُaṣḥābu(are the) companions
ٱلنَّارِ ۖl-nāri(of) the Fire
هُمْhumthey
فِيهَاfīhāin it
خَـٰلِدُونَkhālidūna(will) abide forever

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

Allah says, the matter is not as you have wished and hoped it to be. Rather, whoever does an evil deed and abides purposefully in his error, coming on the Day of Resurrection with no good deeds, only evil deeds, then he will be among the people of the Fire.وَالَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ الصَّـلِحَاتِ(And those who believe and do righteous good deeds) meaning, "They believe in Allah and His Messenger and perform the good deeds that conform with the Islamic Law.
