Al-Fajr (The Dawn)

Verse 23of 30

وَجِا۟ىٓءَ يَوْمَئِذٍۭ بِجَهَنَّمَ ۚ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ يَتَذَكَّرُ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ وَأَنَّىٰ لَهُ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ﴿٢٣

Translation (Sahih International)

And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but what good to him will be the remembrance?

Word-by-word meaning

وَجِا۟ىٓءَwajīaAnd is brought
يَوْمَئِذٍۭyawma-idhinthat Day
بِجَهَنَّمَ ۚbijahannamaHell
يَوْمَئِذٍۢyawma-idhinThat Day
يَتَذَكَّرُyatadhakkaruwill remember
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُl-insānuman
وَأَنَّىٰwa-annābut how
لَهُlahu(will be) for him
ٱلذِّكْرَىٰl-dhik'rāthe remembrance

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

On the Day of Judgement Everyone will be recompensed according to what He did of Good or EvilAllah informs of what will happen on the Day of Judgement of the great horrors. He says,كَلاَّ(Nay!) meaning, truly.إِذَا دُكَّتِ الاٌّرْضُ دَكّاً دَكّاً(When the earth is flatened, Dakkan Dakka.) meaning, the earth and the mountains will be flattened, leveled and made even, and the creatures will rise from their graves for their Lord.
