Verse 14of 29

وَلِلَّهِ مُلْكُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ يَغْفِرُ لِمَن يَشَآءُ وَيُعَذِّبُ مَن يَشَآءُ ۚ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ غَفُورًۭا رَّحِيمًۭا﴿١٤

Translation (Sahih International)

And to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. He forgives whom He wills and punishes whom He wills. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.

Word-by-word meaning

وَلِلَّهِwalillahiAnd for Allah
مُلْكُmul'ku(is the) kingdom
ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِl-samāwāti(of) the heavens
وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۚwal-arḍiand the earth
يَغْفِرُyaghfiruHe forgives
لِمَنlimanwhom
يَشَآءُyashāuHe wills
وَيُعَذِّبُwayuʿadhibuand punishes
مَنmanwhom
يَشَآءُ ۚyashāuHe wills
وَكَانَwakānaAnd is
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
غَفُورًۭاghafūranOft-Forgiving
رَّحِيمًۭاraḥīmanMost Merciful

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

The Fabricated Excuse offered by Those Who lagged behind and did not participate in Al-HudaybiyyahAllah informs His Messenger of the excuses that the bedouins who lagged behind would offer him, those bedouins who preferred to remain in their homes and possessions and did not join the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
