Al-Hujurat (The Rooms)

Verse 2of 18

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَرْفَعُوٓا۟ أَصْوَٰتَكُمْ فَوْقَ صَوْتِ ٱلنَّبِىِّ وَلَا تَجْهَرُوا۟ لَهُۥ بِٱلْقَوْلِ كَجَهْرِ بَعْضِكُمْ لِبَعْضٍ أَن تَحْبَطَ أَعْمَٰلُكُمْ وَأَنتُمْ لَا تَشْعُرُونَ﴿٢

Translation (Sahih International)

O you who have believed, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet or be loud to him in speech like the loudness of some of you to others, lest your deeds become worthless while you perceive not.

Word-by-word meaning

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO you who believe
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaO you who believe
ءَامَنُوا۟āmanūO you who believe
لَا(Do) not
تَرْفَعُوٓا۟tarfaʿūraise
أَصْوَٰتَكُمْaṣwātakumyour voices
فَوْقَfawqaabove
صَوْتِṣawti(the) voice
ٱلنَّبِىِّl-nabiyi(of) the Prophet
وَلَاwalāand (do) not
تَجْهَرُوا۟tajharūbe loud
لَهُۥlahuto him
بِٱلْقَوْلِbil-qawliin speech
كَجَهْرِkajahrilike (the) loudness
بَعْضِكُمْbaʿḍikum(of) some of you
لِبَعْضٍlibaʿḍinto others
أَنanlest
تَحْبَطَtaḥbaṭabecome worthless
أَعْمَـٰلُكُمْaʿmālukumyour deeds
وَأَنتُمْwa-antumwhile you
لَا(do) not
تَشْعُرُونَtashʿurūnaperceive

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

Which was revealed in Al-Madinahبِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَـنِ الرَّحِيمِIn the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.The Prohibition of making a Decision in advance of Allah and His Messenger; ordering Respect towards the ProphetIn these Ayat, Allah the Exalted teaches His faithful servants the good manners they should observe with the Messenger ﷺ, which are respect, honor and esteem.
