Verse 40of 110

فَعَسَىٰ رَبِّىٓ أَن يُؤْتِيَنِ خَيْرًۭا مِّن جَنَّتِكَ وَيُرْسِلَ عَلَيْهَا حُسْبَانًۭا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ فَتُصْبِحَ صَعِيدًۭا زَلَقًا﴿٤٠

Translation (Sahih International)

It may be that my Lord will give me [something] better than your garden and will send upon it a calamity from the sky, and it will become a smooth, dusty ground,

Word-by-word meaning

فَعَسَىٰfaʿasāIt may be
رَبِّىٓrabbīthat my Lord
أَنanthat my Lord
يُؤْتِيَنِyu'tiyaniwill give me
خَيْرًۭاkhayranbetter
مِّنminthan
جَنَّتِكَjannatikayour garden
وَيُرْسِلَwayur'silaand will send
عَلَيْهَاʿalayhāupon it
حُسْبَانًۭاḥus'bānana calamity
مِّنَminafrom
ٱلسَّمَآءِl-samāithe sky
فَتُصْبِحَfatuṣ'biḥathen it will become
صَعِيدًۭاṣaʿīdanground
زَلَقًاzalaqanslippery

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

The Response of the Poor BelieverAllah tells us how the rich man's believing companion replied to him, warning and rebuking him for his disbelief in Allah and allowing himself to be deceived.أَكَفَرْتَ بِالَّذِى خَلَقَكَ مِن تُرَابٍ(Do you disbelieve in Him Who created you out of dust...
