Al-Mulk (The Sovereignty)

Verse 5of 30

وَلَقَدْ زَيَّنَّا ٱلسَّمَآءَ ٱلدُّنْيَا بِمَصَٰبِيحَ وَجَعَلْنَٰهَا رُجُومًۭا لِّلشَّيَٰطِينِ ۖ وَأَعْتَدْنَا لَهُمْ عَذَابَ ٱلسَّعِيرِ﴿٥

Translation (Sahih International)

And We have certainly beautified the nearest heaven with stars and have made [from] them what is thrown at the devils and have prepared for them the punishment of the Blaze.

Word-by-word meaning

وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd certainly
زَيَّنَّاzayyannāWe have beautified
ٱلسَّمَآءَl-samāathe heaven
ٱلدُّنْيَاl-dun'yānearest
بِمَصَـٰبِيحَbimaṣābīḥawith lamps
وَجَعَلْنَـٰهَاwajaʿalnāhāand We have made them
رُجُومًۭاrujūman(as) missiles
لِّلشَّيَـٰطِينِ ۖlilshayāṭīnifor the devils
وَأَعْتَدْنَاwa-aʿtadnāand We have prepared
لَهُمْlahumfor them
عَذَابَʿadhābapunishment
ٱلسَّعِيرِl-saʿīri(of) the Blaze

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

Which was revealed in MakkahThe Virtues of Surat Al-MulkImam Ahmad recorded from Abu Hurayrah that Allah's Messenger ﷺ said,«إِنَّ سُورَةً فِي الْقُرْآنِ ثَلَاثِينَ آيَةً شَفَعَتْ لِصَاحِبِهَا حَتْى غُفِرَ لَهُ:تَبَارَكَ الَّذِى بِيَدِهِ الْمُلْكُ»(Verily, there is a chapter in the Qur'an which contains thirty Ayat that will intercede on behalf of its reciter until he is forgiven. (It is): (Blessed be He in Whose Hand is the dominion.
