Al-Qamar (The Moon)

Verse 31of 55

إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ صَيْحَةًۭ وَٰحِدَةًۭ فَكَانُوا۟ كَهَشِيمِ ٱلْمُحْتَظِرِ﴿٣١

Translation (Sahih International)

Indeed, We sent upon them one blast from the sky, and they became like the dry twig fragments of an [animal] pen.

Word-by-word meaning

إِنَّآinnāIndeed, We
أَرْسَلْنَاarsalnā[We] sent
عَلَيْهِمْʿalayhimupon them
صَيْحَةًۭṣayḥatanthunderous blast
وَٰحِدَةًۭwāḥidatansingle
فَكَانُوا۟fakānūand they became
كَهَشِيمِkahashīmilike dry twig fragments
ٱلْمُحْتَظِرِl-muḥ'taẓiri(used by) a fence builder

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

The Story of ThamudAllah states here that the people of Thamud denied their Messenger Salih,فَقَالُواْ أَبَشَراً مِّنَّا وَحِداً نَّتَّبِعُهُ إِنَّآ إِذاً لَّفِى ضَلَـلٍ وَسُعُرٍ (And they said: "A man, alone among us -- shall we follow him Truly, then we should be in error and distress!") They said, `We would have earned failure and loss if we all submitted to a man from among us.
