Verse 47of 88

وَلَوْلَآ أَن تُصِيبَهُم مُّصِيبَةٌۢ بِمَا قَدَّمَتْ أَيْدِيهِمْ فَيَقُولُوا۟ رَبَّنَا لَوْلَآ أَرْسَلْتَ إِلَيْنَا رَسُولًۭا فَنَتَّبِعَ ءَايَٰتِكَ وَنَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ﴿٤٧

Translation (Sahih International)

And if not that a disaster should strike them for what their hands put forth [of sins] and they would say, "Our Lord, why did You not send us a messenger so we could have followed Your verses and been among the believers?"...

Word-by-word meaning

وَلَوْلَآwalawlāAnd if not
أَنan[that]
تُصِيبَهُمtuṣībahumstruck them
مُّصِيبَةٌۢmuṣībatuna disaster

قَدَّمَتْqaddamathad sent forth

وَنَكُونَwanakūnaand we (would) have been

ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَl-mu'minīnathe believers

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

Proof of the Prophethood of Muhammad ﷺAllah points out the proof of the prophethood of Muhammad ﷺ, whereby he told others about matters of the past, and spoke about them as if he were hearing and seeing them for himself. But he was an illiterate man who could not read books, and he grew up among a people who knew nothing of such things.
