Verse 98of 128

فَإِذَا قَرَأْتَ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ فَٱسْتَعِذْ بِٱللَّهِ مِنَ ٱلشَّيْطَٰنِ ٱلرَّجِيمِ﴿٩٨

Translation (Sahih International)

So when you recite the Qur'an, [first] seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the expelled [from His mercy].

Word-by-word meaning

فَإِذَاfa-idhāSo when
قَرَأْتَqaratayou recite
ٱلْقُرْءَانَl-qur'ānathe Quran
فَٱسْتَعِذْfa-is'taʿidhseek refuge
بِٱللَّهِbil-lahiin Allah
مِنَminafrom
ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنِl-shayṭānithe Shaitaan
ٱلرَّجِيمِl-rajīmithe accursed

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

The Command to seek Refuge with Allah before reciting the Qur'anThis is a command from Allah to His servants upon the tongue of His Prophet , telling them that when they want to read Qur'an, they should seek refuge with Allah from the cursed Shaytan. The Hadiths mentioned about seeking refuge with Allah (Isti`adhah), were quoted in our discussion at the beginning of this Tafsir, praise be to Allah.
