An-Naml (The Ant)

Verse 18of 93

حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَآ أَتَوْا۟ عَلَىٰ وَادِ ٱلنَّمْلِ قَالَتْ نَمْلَةٌۭ يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّمْلُ ٱدْخُلُوا۟ مَسَٰكِنَكُمْ لَا يَحْطِمَنَّكُمْ سُلَيْمَٰنُ وَجُنُودُهُۥ وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ﴿١٨

Translation (Sahih International)

Until, when they came upon the valley of the ants, an ant said, "O ants, enter your dwellings that you not be crushed by Solomon and his soldiers while they perceive not."

Word-by-word meaning

حَتَّىٰٓḥattāUntil

ٱدْخُلُوا۟ud'khulūEnter
مَسَـٰكِنَكُمْmasākinakumyour dwellings
لَاlest not crush you
يَحْطِمَنَّكُمْyaḥṭimannakumlest not crush you
سُلَيْمَـٰنُsulaymānuSulaiman
وَجُنُودُهُۥwajunūduhuand his hosts
وَهُمْwahumwhile they
لَا(do) not perceive
يَشْعُرُونَyashʿurūna(do) not perceive

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

Dawud and Sulayman (peace be upon them), the organization of Sulayman's Troops and His passage through the Valley of the AntsHere Allah tells us about the great blessings and favors which He bestowed upon two of His servants and Prophets, Dawud (David) and his son Sulayman (Solomon), peace be upon them both, and how they enjoyed happiness in this world and the Hereafter, power and authority in this world, and the position of being Prophets and Messengers.
