Verse 61of 227

فَلَمَّا تَرَٰٓءَا ٱلْجَمْعَانِ قَالَ أَصْحَٰبُ مُوسَىٰٓ إِنَّا لَمُدْرَكُونَ﴿٦١

Translation (Sahih International)

And when the two companies saw one another, the companions of Moses said, "Indeed, we are to be overtaken!"

Word-by-word meaning

فَلَمَّاfalammāThen when
تَرَٰٓءَاtarāāsaw each other
ٱلْجَمْعَانِl-jamʿānithe two hosts
قَالَqālasaid
أَصْحَـٰبُaṣḥābu(the) companions
مُوسَىٰٓmūsā(of) Musa
إِنَّاinnāIndeed, we
لَمُدْرَكُونَlamud'rakūna(are) surely to be overtaken

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

Fir`awn's Pursuit and Expulsion of the Children of Israel, and how He and His People were drownedMore than one of the scholars of Tafsir said that Fir`awn set out with a huge group, a group containing the leaders and entire government of Egypt at that time, i.e., the decision-makers and influential figures, princes, ministers, nobles, leaders and soldiers.فَأَتْبَعُوهُم مُّشْرِقِينَ (So, they pursued them at sunrise.) means, they caught up with the Children of Israel at sunrise.
