At-Tahrim (The Prohibition)

Verse 5of 12

عَسَىٰ رَبُّهُۥٓ إِن طَلَّقَكُنَّ أَن يُبْدِلَهُۥٓ أَزْوَٰجًا خَيْرًۭا مِّنكُنَّ مُسْلِمَٰتٍۢ مُّؤْمِنَٰتٍۢ قَٰنِتَٰتٍۢ تَٰٓئِبَٰتٍ عَٰبِدَٰتٍۢ سَٰٓئِحَٰتٍۢ ثَيِّبَٰتٍۢ وَأَبْكَارًۭا﴿٥

Translation (Sahih International)

Perhaps his Lord, if he divorced you [all], would substitute for him wives better than you - submitting [to Allah], believing, devoutly obedient, repentant, worshipping, and traveling - [ones] previously married and virgins.

Word-by-word meaning

عَسَىٰʿasāPerhaps
رَبُّهُۥٓrabbuhuhis Lord

طَلَّقَكُنَّṭallaqakunnahe divorced you
أَنan[that]
يُبْدِلَهُۥٓyub'dilahuHe will substitute for him
أَزْوَٰجًاazwājanwives
خَيْرًۭاkhayranbetter
مِّنكُنَّminkunnathan you
مُسْلِمَـٰتٍۢmus'limātinsubmissive
مُّؤْمِنَـٰتٍۢmu'minātinfaithful
قَـٰنِتَـٰتٍۢqānitātinobedient
تَـٰٓئِبَـٰتٍtāibātinrepentant
عَـٰبِدَٰتٍۢʿābidātinwho worship
سَـٰٓئِحَـٰتٍۢsāiḥātinwho fast
ثَيِّبَـٰتٍۢthayyibātinpreviously married
وَأَبْكَارًۭاwa-abkāranand virgins

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

Which was revealed in Al-Madinahبِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَـنِ الرَّحِيمِ(In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.Allah censures His Prophet for Prohibiting Himself from what He has allowed for Him In the BookAl-Bukhari recorded that `Ubayd bin `Umayr said that he heard `A'ishah claiming that Allah's Messenger ﷺ used to stay for a period in the house of Zaynab bint Jahsh and drink honey in her house.
