Verse 38of 89

حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا جَآءَنَا قَالَ يَٰلَيْتَ بَيْنِى وَبَيْنَكَ بُعْدَ ٱلْمَشْرِقَيْنِ فَبِئْسَ ٱلْقَرِينُ﴿٣٨

Translation (Sahih International)

Until, when he comes to Us [at Judgement], he says [to his companion], "Oh, I wish there was between me and you the distance between the east and west - how wretched a companion."

Word-by-word meaning

حَتَّىٰٓḥattāUntil
إِذَاidhāwhen
جَآءَنَاjāanāhe comes to Us
قَالَqālahe says
يَـٰلَيْتَyālaytaO would that
بَيْنِىbaynībetween me
وَبَيْنَكَwabaynakaand between you
بُعْدَbuʿ'da(were the) distance
ٱلْمَشْرِقَيْنِl-mashriqayni(of) the East and the West
فَبِئْسَfabi'saHow wretched is
ٱلْقَرِينُl-qarīnuthe companion

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

The Shaytan is the Companion of the One Who turns away from Ar-Rahmanوَمَن يَعْشُ(And whosoever Ya`shu (turns away blindly)) means, whoever willfully ignores and turns awayعَن ذِكْرِ الرَّحْمَـنِ(from the remembrance of the Most Gracious,) Al-`Asha (the root of Ya`sh) refers to weakness of vision; what is meant here is weakness of insight.نُقَيِّضْ لَهُ شَيْطَاناً فَهُوَ لَهُ قَرِينٌ(We appoint for him Shaytan to be a Qarin (a companion) to him.
