Az-Zumar (The Troops)

Verse 5of 75

خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ بِٱلْحَقِّ ۖ يُكَوِّرُ ٱلَّيْلَ عَلَى ٱلنَّهَارِ وَيُكَوِّرُ ٱلنَّهَارَ عَلَى ٱلَّيْلِ ۖ وَسَخَّرَ ٱلشَّمْسَ وَٱلْقَمَرَ ۖ كُلٌّۭ يَجْرِى لِأَجَلٍۢ مُّسَمًّى ۗ أَلَا هُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْغَفَّٰرُ﴿٥﴾

Translation (Sahih International)

He created the heavens and earth in truth. He wraps the night over the day and wraps the day over the night and has subjected the sun and the moon, each running [its course] for a specified term. Unquestionably, He is the Exalted in Might, the Perpetual Forgiver.

Word-by-word meaning

خَلَقَkhalaqaHe created
ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِl-samāwātithe heavens
وَٱلْأَرْضَwal-arḍaand the earth
بِٱلْحَقِّ ۖbil-ḥaqiin [the] truth
يُكَوِّرُyukawwiruHe wraps
ٱلَّيْلَal-laylathe night
عَلَىʿalāover
ٱلنَّهَارِl-nahārithe day
وَيُكَوِّرُwayukawwiruand wraps
ٱلنَّهَارَl-nahārathe day
عَلَىʿalāover
ٱلَّيْلِ ۖal-laylithe night
وَسَخَّرَwasakharaAnd He subjected
ٱلشَّمْسَl-shamsathe sun
وَٱلْقَمَرَ ۖwal-qamaraand the moon
كُلٌّۭkulluneach
يَجْرِىyajrīrunning
لِأَجَلٍۢli-ajalinfor a term
مُّسَمًّى ۗmusammanspecified
أَلَاalāUnquestionably
هُوَhuwaHe
ٱلْعَزِيزُl-ʿazīzu(is) the All-Mighty
ٱلْغَفَّـٰرُl-ghafāruthe Oft-Forgiving

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

Evidence of the Power and Oneness of AllahAllah tells us that He is the Creator of what is in the heavens and on earth, and what is between them. He is the Sovereign and Controller alternating the night and day. يُكَوِّرُ الَّيْـلَ عَلَى النَّهَـارِ وَيُكَوِّرُ النَّـهَارَ عَلَى الَّيْلِ(He makes the night to go in the day and makes the day to go in the night.
