Verse 1of 52

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ الٓر ۚ كِتَٰبٌ أَنزَلْنَٰهُ إِلَيْكَ لِتُخْرِجَ ٱلنَّاسَ مِنَ ٱلظُّلُمَٰتِ إِلَى ٱلنُّورِ بِإِذْنِ رَبِّهِمْ إِلَىٰ صِرَٰطِ ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلْحَمِيدِ﴿١

Translation (Sahih International)

Alif, Lam, Ra. [This is] a Book which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], that you might bring mankind out of darknesses into the light by permission of their Lord - to the path of the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy -

Word-by-word meaning

الٓر ۚalif-lam-raAlif Laam Ra
كِتَـٰبٌkitābunA Book
أَنزَلْنَـٰهُanzalnāhuwhich We have revealed
إِلَيْكَilaykato you
لِتُخْرِجَlitukh'rijaso that you may bring out
ٱلنَّاسَl-nāsathe mankind
مِنَminafrom
ٱلظُّلُمَـٰتِl-ẓulumātithe darkness[es]
إِلَىilāto
ٱلنُّورِl-nūrithe light
بِإِذْنِbi-idh'niby the permission
رَبِّهِمْrabbihim(of) their Lord
إِلَىٰilāto
صِرَٰطِṣirāṭithe Path
ٱلْعَزِيزِl-ʿazīzi(of) the All-Mighty
ٱلْحَمِيدِl-ḥamīdithe Praiseworthy

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

Which was revealed in Makkah(بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَـنِ الرَّحِيمِ )In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.Describing the Qur'an and warning Those Who defy itPreviously we discussed the meaning of the separate letters that appear in the beginnings of some Surahs.كِتَابٌ أَنزَلْنَـهُ إِلَيْكَ((This is) a Book which We have revealed unto you...) Allah says, `This is a Book that We have revealed to you, O Muhammad.
