Verse 7of 34

وَإِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ ءَايَٰتُنَا وَلَّىٰ مُسْتَكْبِرًۭا كَأَن لَّمْ يَسْمَعْهَا كَأَنَّ فِىٓ أُذُنَيْهِ وَقْرًۭا ۖ فَبَشِّرْهُ بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ﴿٧

Translation (Sahih International)

And when our verses are recited to him, he turns away arrogantly as if he had not heard them, as if there was in his ears deafness. So give him tidings of a painful punishment.

Word-by-word meaning

وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd when
تُتْلَىٰtut'lāare recited
عَلَيْهِʿalayhito him
ءَايَـٰتُنَاāyātunāOur Verses
وَلَّىٰwallāhe turns away
مُسْتَكْبِرًۭاmus'takbiranarrogantly
كَأَنka-anas if
لَّمْlamnot
يَسْمَعْهَاyasmaʿhāhe (had) heard them
كَأَنَّka-annaas if
فِىٓin
أُذُنَيْهِudhunayhihis ears
وَقْرًۭا ۖwaqran(is) deafness
فَبَشِّرْهُfabashir'huSo give him tidings
بِعَذَابٍbiʿadhābinof a punishment
أَلِيمٍalīminpainful

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

Which was revealed in Makkahبِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَـنِ الرَّحِيمِ In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful The Doomed are preoccupied with Idle Talk and They turn away from the Ayat of AllahWhen Allah mentions the blessed -- who are those who are guided by the Book of Allah and benefit from hearing it, as He says:اللَّهُ نَزَّلَ أَحْسَنَ الْحَدِيثِ كِتَـباً مُّتَشَـبِهاً مَّثَانِيَ تَقْشَعِرُّ مِنْهُ جُلُودُ الَّذِينَ يَخْشَوْنَ رَبَّهُمْ ثُمَّ تَلِينُ جُلُودُهُمْ وَقُلُوبُهُمْ إِلَى ...
