Al-Ahqaf (The Wind-Curved Sandhills)

Verse 29of 35

وَإِذْ صَرَفْنَآ إِلَيْكَ نَفَرًۭا مِّنَ ٱلْجِنِّ يَسْتَمِعُونَ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ فَلَمَّا حَضَرُوهُ قَالُوٓا۟ أَنصِتُوا۟ ۖ فَلَمَّا قُضِىَ وَلَّوْا۟ إِلَىٰ قَوْمِهِم مُّنذِرِينَ﴿٢٩

Translation (Sahih International)

And [mention, O Muhammad], when We directed to you a few of the jinn, listening to the Qur'an. And when they attended it, they said, "Listen quietly." And when it was concluded, they went back to their people as warners.

وَإِذْwa-idhAnd when
صَرَفْنَآṣarafnāWe directed

حَضَرُوهُḥaḍarūhuthey attended it
قَالُوٓا۟qālūthey said
أَنصِتُوا۟ ۖanṣitūListen quietly
فَلَمَّاfalammāAnd when
قُضِىَquḍiyait was concluded
وَلَّوْا۟wallawthey turned back
إِلَىٰilāto
قَوْمِهِمqawmihimtheir people
مُّنذِرِينَmundhirīna(as) warners

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

The Story of the Jinns listening to the Qur'anImam Ahmad recorded from Az-Zubayr that he commented on the Ayah;وَإِذْ صَرَفْنَآ إِلَيْكَ نَفَراً مِّنَ الْجِنِّ يَسْتَمِعُونَ الْقُرْءَانَ(And (remember) when We sent towards you a group of the Jinn, to listen to the Qur'an.) "They were at a place called Nakhlah while Allah's Messenger ﷺ was performing the `Isha' prayer, andكَادُواْ يَكُونُونَ عَلَيْهِ لِبَداً(they crowded on top of each other to hear him.
