Al-An'am (The Cattle)

Verse 112of 165

وَكَذَٰلِكَ جَعَلْنَا لِكُلِّ نَبِىٍّ عَدُوًّۭا شَيَٰطِينَ ٱلْإِنسِ وَٱلْجِنِّ يُوحِى بَعْضُهُمْ إِلَىٰ بَعْضٍۢ زُخْرُفَ ٱلْقَوْلِ غُرُورًۭا ۚ وَلَوْ شَآءَ رَبُّكَ مَا فَعَلُوهُ ۖ فَذَرْهُمْ وَمَا يَفْتَرُونَ﴿١١٢

Translation (Sahih International)

And thus We have made for every prophet an enemy - devils from mankind and jinn, inspiring to one another decorative speech in delusion. But if your Lord had willed, they would not have done it, so leave them and that which they invent.

Word-by-word meaning

وَكَذَٰلِكَwakadhālikaAnd thus
جَعَلْنَاjaʿalnāWe made
لِكُلِّlikullifor every
نَبِىٍّnabiyyinProphet
عَدُوًّۭاʿaduwwanan enemy
شَيَـٰطِينَshayāṭīnadevils
ٱلْإِنسِl-insi(from) the mankind
وَٱلْجِنِّwal-jiniand the jinn
يُوحِىyūḥīinspiring
بَعْضُهُمْbaʿḍuhumsome of them
إِلَىٰilāto
بَعْضٍۢbaʿḍinothers
زُخْرُفَzukh'rufa(with) decorative
ٱلْقَوْلِl-qawli[the] speech
غُرُورًۭا ۚghurūran(in) deception
وَلَوْwalawBut if
شَآءَshāa(had) willed
رَبُّكَrabbukayour Lord
مَاnot
فَعَلُوهُ ۖfaʿalūhuthey (would) have done it
فَذَرْهُمْfadharhumso leave them
وَمَاwamāand what
يَفْتَرُونَyaftarūnathey invent

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

Every Prophet Has EnemiesAllah says, just as We made enemies for you, O Muhammad, who will oppose and rebel against you and become your adversaries, We also made enemies for every Prophet who came before you. Therefore, do not be saddened by this fact. Allah said in other Ayat:وَلَقَدْ كُذِّبَتْ رُسُلٌ مِّن قَبْلِكَ فَصَبَرُواْ عَلَى مَا كُذِّبُواْ وَأُوذُواْ(Verily, Messengers were denied before you, but with patience they bore the denial, and they were hurt...
