Al-Anbiya (The Prophets)

Verse 44of 112

بَلْ مَتَّعْنَا هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ وَءَابَآءَهُمْ حَتَّىٰ طَالَ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْعُمُرُ ۗ أَفَلَا يَرَوْنَ أَنَّا نَأْتِى ٱلْأَرْضَ نَنقُصُهَا مِنْ أَطْرَافِهَآ ۚ أَفَهُمُ ٱلْغَٰلِبُونَ﴿٤٤

Translation (Sahih International)

But, [on the contrary], We have provided good things for these [disbelievers] and their fathers until life was prolonged for them. Then do they not see that We set upon the land, reducing it from its borders? So it is they who will overcome?

Word-by-word meaning

بَلْbalNay
مَتَّعْنَاmattaʿnāWe gave provision
هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِhāulāi(to) these
وَءَابَآءَهُمْwaābāahumand their fathers
حَتَّىٰḥattāuntil
طَالَṭālagrew long
عَلَيْهِمُʿalayhimufor them
ٱلْعُمُرُ ۗl-ʿumuruthe life
أَفَلَاafalāThen do not
يَرَوْنَyarawnathey see
أَنَّاannāthat We
نَأْتِىnatīWe come
ٱلْأَرْضَl-arḍa(to) the land
نَنقُصُهَاnanquṣuhāWe reduce it
مِنْminfrom
أَطْرَافِهَآ ۚaṭrāfihāits borders
أَفَهُمُafahumuSo is (it) they
ٱلْغَـٰلِبُونَl-ghālibūna(who will be) overcoming

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

How the Idolators are deceived by their long and luxurious Lives in this World, and the Explanation of the TruthAllah explains that they have been deceived and misled by the luxuries that they enjoy in this world and the long life that they have been given, so they believe that they are following something good.
