Verse 23of 206

قَالَا رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَآ أَنفُسَنَا وَإِن لَّمْ تَغْفِرْ لَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلْخَٰسِرِينَ﴿٢٣

Translation (Sahih International)

They said, "Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers."

Word-by-word meaning

قَالَاqālāBoth of them said
رَبَّنَاrabbanāOur Lord
ظَلَمْنَآẓalamnāwe have wronged
أَنفُسَنَاanfusanāourselves
وَإِنwa-inand if
لَّمْlamnot
تَغْفِرْtaghfirYou forgive

وَتَرْحَمْنَاwatarḥamnāand have mercy (on) us
لَنَكُونَنَّlanakūnannasurely, we will be
مِنَminaamong
ٱلْخَـٰسِرِينَl-khāsirīnathe losers

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

وَطَفِقَا يَخْصِفَانِ عَلَيْهِمَا مِن وَرَقِ الْجَنَّةِ(And they began to cover themselves with the leaves of Paradise.) "Using fig leaves." This statement has an authentic chain of narration leading to Ibn `Abbas. Mujahid said that they began to cover themselves with the leaves of Paradise, "Making them as a dress (or garment).
