Al-Baqarah (The Cow)
Verse 154of 286
وَلَا تَقُولُوا۟ لِمَن يُقْتَلُ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ أَمْوَٰتٌۢ ۚ بَلْ أَحْيَآءٌۭ وَلَٰكِن لَّا تَشْعُرُونَ﴿١٥٤﴾
Translation (Sahih International)
And do not say about those who are killed in the way of Allah, "They are dead." Rather, they are alive, but you perceive [it] not.
Word-by-word meaning
وَلَاwalāAnd (do) not
تَقُولُوا۟taqūlūsay
لِمَنlimanfor (the ones) who
يُقْتَلُyuq'taluare slain
فِىfīin
سَبِيلِsabīli(the) way
ٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allah
أَمْوَٰتٌۢ ۚamwātun(They are) dead
بَلْbalNay
أَحْيَآءٌۭaḥyāon(they are) alive
وَلَـٰكِنwalākin[and] but
لَّاlāyou (do) not
تَشْعُرُونَtashʿurūnaperceive
Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)
The Virtue of Patience and PrayerAfter Allah commanded that He be appreciated, He ordained patience and prayer. It is a fact that the servant is either enjoying a bounty that he should be thankful for, or suffering a calamity that he should meet with patience.
