Verse 39of 78

أُذِنَ لِلَّذِينَ يُقَٰتَلُونَ بِأَنَّهُمْ ظُلِمُوا۟ ۚ وَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلَىٰ نَصْرِهِمْ لَقَدِيرٌ﴿٣٩

Translation (Sahih International)

Permission [to fight] has been given to those who are being fought, because they were wronged. And indeed, Allah is competent to give them victory.

Word-by-word meaning

أُذِنَudhinaPermission is given
لِلَّذِينَlilladhīnato those who
يُقَـٰتَلُونَyuqātalūnaare being fought
بِأَنَّهُمْbi-annahumbecause they
ظُلِمُوا۟ ۚẓulimūwere wronged
وَإِنَّwa-innaAnd indeed
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
عَلَىٰʿalāfor
نَصْرِهِمْnaṣrihimtheir victory
لَقَدِيرٌlaqadīrun(is) surely Able

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

Permission to fight; this is the first Ayah of JihadAl-`Awfi reported that Ibn `Abbas said, "This was revealed about Muhammad ﷺ and his Companions, when they were expelled from Makkah." Mujahid, Ad-Dahhak and others among the Salaf, such as Ibn `Abbas, `Urwah bin Az-Zubayr, Zayd bin Aslam, Muqatil bin Hayan, Qatadah and others said, "This is the first Ayah which was revealed about Jihad.
