Al-Isra (The Night Journey)

Verse 64of 111

وَٱسْتَفْزِزْ مَنِ ٱسْتَطَعْتَ مِنْهُم بِصَوْتِكَ وَأَجْلِبْ عَلَيْهِم بِخَيْلِكَ وَرَجِلِكَ وَشَارِكْهُمْ فِى ٱلْأَمْوَٰلِ وَٱلْأَوْلَٰدِ وَعِدْهُمْ ۚ وَمَا يَعِدُهُمُ ٱلشَّيْطَٰنُ إِلَّا غُرُورًا﴿٦٤﴾

Translation (Sahih International)

And incite [to senselessness] whoever you can among them with your voice and assault them with your horses and foot soldiers and become a partner in their wealth and their children and promise them." But Satan does not promise them except delusion.

Word-by-word meaning

وَٱسْتَفْزِزْwa-is'tafzizAnd incite

مَنِmaniwhoever

ٱسْتَطَعْتَis'taṭaʿtayou can

مِنْهُمmin'humamong them

بِصَوْتِكَbiṣawtikawith your voice

وَأَجْلِبْwa-ajliband assault

عَلَيْهِمʿalayhim[on] them

بِخَيْلِكَbikhaylikawith your cavalry

وَرَجِلِكَwarajilikaand infantry

وَشَارِكْهُمْwashārik'humand be a partner

فِىfīin

ٱلْأَمْوَٰلِl-amwālithe wealth

وَٱلْأَوْلَـٰدِwal-awlādiand the children

وَعِدْهُمْ ۚwaʿid'humand promise them

وَمَاwamāAnd not

يَعِدُهُمُyaʿiduhumupromises them

ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُl-shayṭānuthe Shaitaan

إِلَّاillāexcept

غُرُورًاghurūrandelusion

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

اذْهَبْ`(Go,) I will give you respite.' According to another Ayah (Allah) said:قَالَ فَإِنَّكَ مِنَ الْمُنظَرِينَ - إِلَى يَوْمِ الْوَقْتِ الْمَعْلُومِ(Verily, you are of those allowed respite till the Day of the time appointed.) (38:80-81).
