Al-Kahf (The Cave)

Verse 46of 110

ٱلْمَالُ وَٱلْبَنُونَ زِينَةُ ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا ۖ وَٱلْبَٰقِيَٰتُ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتُ خَيْرٌ عِندَ رَبِّكَ ثَوَابًۭا وَخَيْرٌ أَمَلًۭا﴿٤٦

Translation (Sahih International)

Wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for [one's] hope.

Word-by-word meaning

ٱلْمَالُal-māluThe wealth
وَٱلْبَنُونَwal-banūnaand children
زِينَةُzīnatu(are) adornment
ٱلْحَيَوٰةِl-ḥayati(of) the life
ٱلدُّنْيَا ۖl-dun'yā(of) the world
وَٱلْبَـٰقِيَـٰتُwal-bāqiyātuBut the enduring
ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتُl-ṣāliḥātugood deeds
خَيْرٌkhayrun(are) better
عِندَʿindanear
رَبِّكَrabbikayour Lord
ثَوَابًۭاthawāban(for) reward
وَخَيْرٌwakhayrunand better
أَمَلًۭاamalan(for) hope

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

The Parable of the Worldly LifeAllah says:وَاضْرِبْ لَهُم(And mention) O Muhammad, to the people,مَثَلُ الْحَيَوةِ الدُّنْيَا(the parable of the worldly life), its transient nature and how it will eventually cease and come to an end.
