Al-Kahf (The Cave)

Verse 80of 110

وَأَمَّا ٱلْغُلَٰمُ فَكَانَ أَبَوَاهُ مُؤْمِنَيْنِ فَخَشِينَآ أَن يُرْهِقَهُمَا طُغْيَٰنًۭا وَكُفْرًۭا﴿٨٠

Translation (Sahih International)

And as for the boy, his parents were believers, and we feared that he would overburden them by transgression and disbelief.

Word-by-word meaning

وَأَمَّاwa-ammāAnd as for
ٱلْغُلَـٰمُl-ghulāmuthe boy
فَكَانَfakānahis parents were
أَبَوَاهُabawāhuhis parents were
مُؤْمِنَيْنِmu'minaynibelievers
فَخَشِينَآfakhashīnāand we feared
أَنanthat
يُرْهِقَهُمَاyur'hiqahumāhe would overburden them
طُغْيَـٰنًۭاṭugh'yānan(by) transgression
وَكُفْرًۭاwakuf'ranand disbelief

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

Interpretation of why the Boy was killedIbn `Abbas narrated from Ubayy bin Ka`b that the Prophet said:«الْغُلَامُ الَّذِي قَتَلَهُ الْخَضِرُ طُبِعَ يَوْمَ طُبِعَ كَافِرًا»(The boy Al-Khidr killed was destined to be a disbeliever from the day he was created.) It was recorded by Ibn Jarir from Ibn `Abbas.
