Al-Ma'idah (The Table Spread)

Verse 22of 120

قَالُوا۟ يَٰمُوسَىٰٓ إِنَّ فِيهَا قَوْمًۭا جَبَّارِينَ وَإِنَّا لَن نَّدْخُلَهَا حَتَّىٰ يَخْرُجُوا۟ مِنْهَا فَإِن يَخْرُجُوا۟ مِنْهَا فَإِنَّا دَٰخِلُونَ﴿٢٢

Translation (Sahih International)

They said, "O Moses, indeed within it is a people of tyrannical strength, and indeed, we will never enter it until they leave it; but if they leave it, then we will enter."

Word-by-word meaning

قَالُوا۟qālūThey said
يَـٰمُوسَىٰٓyāmūsāO Musa
إِنَّinnaIndeed
فِيهَاfīhāin it
قَوْمًۭاqawman(are) people
جَبَّارِينَjabbārīna(of) tyrannical strength
وَإِنَّاwa-innāand indeed, we
لَنlannever
نَّدْخُلَهَاnadkhulahāwill enter it
حَتَّىٰḥattāuntil
يَخْرُجُوا۟yakhrujūthey leave
مِنْهَاmin'hāfrom it
فَإِنfa-inand if
يَخْرُجُوا۟yakhrujūthey leave
مِنْهَاmin'hā[from] it
فَإِنَّاfa-innāthen certainly we (will)
دَٰخِلُونَdākhilūnaenter (it)

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

Musa Reminds His People of Allah's Favors on Them; The Jews Refuse to Enter the Holy LandAllah states that His servant, Messenger, to whom He spoke directly, Musa, the son of `Imran, reminded his people that among the favors Allah granted them, is that He will give them all of the good of this life and the Hereafter, if they remain on the righteous and straight path.
