Verse 166of 200

وَمَآ أَصَٰبَكُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلْتَقَى ٱلْجَمْعَانِ فَبِإِذْنِ ٱللَّهِ وَلِيَعْلَمَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ﴿١٦٦

Translation (Sahih International)

And what struck you on the day the two armies met was by permission of Allah that He might make evident the [true] believers.

Word-by-word meaning

وَمَآwamāAnd what
أَصَـٰبَكُمْaṣābakumstruck you
يَوْمَyawma(on the) day
ٱلْتَقَىl-taqā(when) met
ٱلْجَمْعَانِl-jamʿānithe two hosts
فَبِإِذْنِfabi-idh'ni(was) by (the) permission
ٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allah
وَلِيَعْلَمَwaliyaʿlamaand that He (might) make evident
ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَl-mu'minīnathe believers

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

The Reason and Wisdom Behind the Defeat at UhudAllah said,أَوَ لَمَّا أَصَـبَتْكُمْ مُّصِيبَةٌ(When a single disaster smites you), in reference to when the Muslims suffered seventy fatalities during the battle of Uhud,قَدْ أَصَبْتُمْ مِّثْلَيْهَا(although you smote (your enemies) with one twice as great,) during Badr, when the Muslims killed seventy Mushriks and captured seventy others,قُلْتُمْ أَنَّى هَـذَا(you say: "From where does this come to us") why did this defeat happen to usقُلْ هُوَ مِ...
