An-Naml (The Ant)

Verse 46of 93

قَالَ يَٰقَوْمِ لِمَ تَسْتَعْجِلُونَ بِٱلسَّيِّئَةِ قَبْلَ ٱلْحَسَنَةِ ۖ لَوْلَا تَسْتَغْفِرُونَ ٱللَّهَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ﴿٤٦

Translation (Sahih International)

He said, "O my people, why are you impatient for evil instead of good? Why do you not seek forgiveness of Allah that you may receive mercy?"

Word-by-word meaning

قَالَqālaHe said
يَـٰقَوْمِyāqawmiO my people
لِمَlimaWhy
تَسْتَعْجِلُونَtastaʿjilūna(do) you seek to hasten
بِٱلسَّيِّئَةِbil-sayi-atithe evil
قَبْلَqablabefore
ٱلْحَسَنَةِ ۖl-ḥasanatithe good
لَوْلَاlawlāWhy not
تَسْتَغْفِرُونَtastaghfirūnayou ask forgiveness
ٱللَّهَl-laha(of) Allah
لَعَلَّكُمْlaʿallakumso that you may
تُرْحَمُونَtur'ḥamūnareceive mercy

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

Salih and ThamudAllah tells us about Thamud and how they responded to their Prophet Salih, when Allah sent him to call them to worship Allah alone, with no partner or associate.فَإِذَا هُمْ فَرِيقَانِ يَخْتَصِمُونَ(Then look! They became two parties quarreling with each other.) Mujahid said, "These were believers and disbelievers.
