An-Naml (The Ant)

Verse 47of 93

قَالُوا۟ ٱطَّيَّرْنَا بِكَ وَبِمَن مَّعَكَ ۚ قَالَ طَٰٓئِرُكُمْ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ ۖ بَلْ أَنتُمْ قَوْمٌۭ تُفْتَنُونَ﴿٤٧

Translation (Sahih International)

They said, "We consider you a bad omen, you and those with you." He said, "Your omen is with Allah. Rather, you are a people being tested."

Word-by-word meaning

قَالُوا۟qālūThey said
ٱطَّيَّرْنَاiṭṭayyarnāWe consider you a bad omen
بِكَbikaWe consider you a bad omen
وَبِمَنwabimanand those
مَّعَكَ ۚmaʿakawith you
قَالَqālaHe said
طَـٰٓئِرُكُمْṭāirukumYour bad omen
عِندَʿinda(is) with
ٱللَّهِ ۖl-lahiAllah
بَلْbalNay
أَنتُمْantumyou
قَوْمٌۭqawmun(are) a people
تُفْتَنُونَtuf'tanūnabeing tested

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

Salih and ThamudAllah tells us about Thamud and how they responded to their Prophet Salih, when Allah sent him to call them to worship Allah alone, with no partner or associate.فَإِذَا هُمْ فَرِيقَانِ يَخْتَصِمُونَ(Then look! They became two parties quarreling with each other.) Mujahid said, "These were believers and disbelievers.
