An-Nur (The Light)

Verse 2of 64

ٱلزَّانِيَةُ وَٱلزَّانِى فَٱجْلِدُوا۟ كُلَّ وَٰحِدٍۢ مِّنْهُمَا مِا۟ئَةَ جَلْدَةٍۢ ۖ وَلَا تَأْخُذْكُم بِهِمَا رَأْفَةٌۭ فِى دِينِ ٱللَّهِ إِن كُنتُمْ تُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْءَاخِرِ ۖ وَلْيَشْهَدْ عَذَابَهُمَا طَآئِفَةٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ﴿٢﴾

Translation (Sahih International)

The [unmarried] woman or [unmarried] man found guilty of sexual intercourse - lash each one of them with a hundred lashes, and do not be taken by pity for them in the religion of Allah, if you should believe in Allah and the Last Day. And let a group of the believers witness their punishment.

Word-by-word meaning

ٱلزَّانِيَةُal-zāniyatuThe fornicatress

وَٰحِدٍۢwāḥidinone

تَأْخُذْكُمtakhudh'kumwithhold you

دِينِdīni(the) religion of Allah
ٱللَّهِl-lahi(the) religion of Allah
إِنinif
كُنتُمْkuntumyou
تُؤْمِنُونَtu'minūnabelieve
بِٱللَّهِbil-lahiin Allah
وَٱلْيَوْمِwal-yawmiand the Day
ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ ۖl-ākhirithe Last
وَلْيَشْهَدْwalyashhadAnd let witness
عَذَابَهُمَاʿadhābahumātheir punishment
طَآئِفَةٌۭṭāifatuna group
مِّنَminaof
ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَl-mu'minīnathe believers

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

Which was Revealed in Al-Madinahبِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَـنِ الرَّحِيمِIn the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.The Importance of Surat An-Nurسُورَةٌ أَنزَلْنَـهَا(A Surah which We have sent down) Here Allah is pointing out the high esteem in which He holds this Surah, which is not to say that other Surahs are not important.
