An-Nur (The Light)

Verse 4of 64

وَٱلَّذِينَ يَرْمُونَ ٱلْمُحْصَنَٰتِ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَأْتُوا۟ بِأَرْبَعَةِ شُهَدَآءَ فَٱجْلِدُوهُمْ ثَمَٰنِينَ جَلْدَةًۭ وَلَا تَقْبَلُوا۟ لَهُمْ شَهَٰدَةً أَبَدًۭا ۚ وَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْفَٰسِقُونَ﴿٤

Translation (Sahih International)

And those who accuse chaste women and then do not produce four witnesses - lash them with eighty lashes and do not accept from them testimony ever after. And those are the defiantly disobedient,

Word-by-word meaning

وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those who
يَرْمُونَyarmūnaaccuse
ٱلْمُحْصَنَـٰتِl-muḥ'ṣanātithe chaste women
ثُمَّthummathen
لَمْlamnot
يَأْتُوا۟yatūthey bring
بِأَرْبَعَةِbi-arbaʿatifour
شُهَدَآءَshuhadāawitnesses
فَٱجْلِدُوهُمْfa-ij'lidūhumthen flog them
ثَمَـٰنِينَthamānīna(with) eighty
جَلْدَةًۭjaldatanlashe(s)
وَلَاwalāand (do) not
تَقْبَلُوا۟taqbalūaccept
لَهُمْlahumtheir
شَهَـٰدَةًshahādatantestimony
أَبَدًۭا ۚabadanever
وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَwa-ulāikaAnd those
هُمُhumuthey
ٱلْفَـٰسِقُونَl-fāsiqūna(are) the defiantly disobedient

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

The Prescribed Punishment for slandering Chaste WomenThis Ayah states the prescribed punishment for making false accusations against chaste women, i.e., those who are free, adult and chaste. If the person who is falsely accused is a man, the same punishment of flogging also applies. If the accuser produces evidence that what he is saying is true, then the punishment does not apply.
