At-Tawbah (The Repentance)

Verse 123of 129

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ قَٰتِلُوا۟ ٱلَّذِينَ يَلُونَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْكُفَّارِ وَلْيَجِدُوا۟ فِيكُمْ غِلْظَةًۭ ۚ وَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَعَ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ﴿١٢٣﴾

Translation (Sahih International)

O you who have believed, fight those adjacent to you of the disbelievers and let them find in you harshness. And know that Allah is with the righteous.

Word-by-word meaning

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO you who believe
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaO you who believe
ءَامَنُوا۟āmanūO you who believe
قَـٰتِلُوا۟qātilūFight
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
يَلُونَكُمyalūnakum(are) close to you
مِّنَminaof
ٱلْكُفَّارِl-kufārithe disbelievers
وَلْيَجِدُوا۟walyajidūand let them find
فِيكُمْfīkumin you
غِلْظَةًۭ ۚghil'ẓatanharshness
وَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟wa-iʿ'lamūAnd know
أَنَّannathat
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
مَعَmaʿa(is) with
ٱلْمُتَّقِينَl-mutaqīnathose who fear (Him)

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

The Order for Jihad against the Disbelievers, the Closest, then the Farthest AreasAllah commands the believers to fight the disbelievers, the closest in area to the Islamic state, then the farthest. This is why the Messenger of Allah ﷺ started fighting the idolators in the Arabian Peninsula.
