Verse 35of 52
وَإِذْ قَالَ إِبْرَٰهِيمُ رَبِّ ٱجْعَلْ هَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدَ ءَامِنًۭا وَٱجْنُبْنِى وَبَنِىَّ أَن نَّعْبُدَ ٱلْأَصْنَامَ﴿٣٥﴾
Translation (Sahih International)
And [mention, O Muhammad], when Abraham said, "My Lord, make this city [Makkah] secure and keep me and my sons away from worshipping idols.
Word-by-word meaning
وَإِذْwa-idhAnd when
قَالَqālasaid
إِبْرَٰهِيمُib'rāhīmuIbrahim
رَبِّrabbiMy Lord
ٱجْعَلْij'ʿalMake
هَـٰذَاhādhāthis
ٱلْبَلَدَl-baladacity
ءَامِنًۭاāminansafe
وَٱجْنُبْنِىwa-uj'nub'nīand keep me away
وَبَنِىَّwabaniyyaand my sons
أَنanthat
نَّعْبُدَnaʿbudawe worship
ٱلْأَصْنَامَl-aṣnāmathe idols
Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)
brahim's Supplication to Allah when He brought Isma`il to MakkahAllah mentions here, while bringing forth more evidences against Arab polytheists, that the Sacred House in Makkah was established on the worship of Allah alone, without partners.
