Taha (Ta-Ha)

Verse 131of 135

وَلَا تَمُدَّنَّ عَيْنَيْكَ إِلَىٰ مَا مَتَّعْنَا بِهِۦٓ أَزْوَٰجًۭا مِّنْهُمْ زَهْرَةَ ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا لِنَفْتِنَهُمْ فِيهِ ۚ وَرِزْقُ رَبِّكَ خَيْرٌۭ وَأَبْقَىٰ﴿١٣١

Translation (Sahih International)

And do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to [some] categories of them, [its being but] the splendor of worldly life by which We test them. And the provision of your Lord is better and more enduring.

Word-by-word meaning

وَلَاwalāAnd (do) not

بِهِۦٓbihi[with it]

ٱلْحَيَوٰةِl-ḥayati(of) the life
ٱلدُّنْيَاl-dun'yā(of) the world
لِنَفْتِنَهُمْlinaftinahumthat We may test them
فِيهِ ۚfīhiin it
وَرِزْقُwariz'quAnd (the) provision
رَبِّكَrabbika(of) your Lord
خَيْرٌۭkhayrun(is) better
وَأَبْقَىٰwa-abqāand more lasting

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

Do not look at the Enjoyment of the Wealthy, be patient in the worship of AllahAllah, the Exalted, says to His Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, "Do not look at what these people of luxury and their likes and peers have of nice comforts. For verily, it is only short-lived splendor and a feeble bounty, which We are using to test them with. And very few of My servants are truly thankful." Mujahid said,أَزْوَجاً مِّنْهُمْ(various groups of them,) "This means the wealthy people.
