Verse 87of 135

قَالُوا۟ مَآ أَخْلَفْنَا مَوْعِدَكَ بِمَلْكِنَا وَلَٰكِنَّا حُمِّلْنَآ أَوْزَارًۭا مِّن زِينَةِ ٱلْقَوْمِ فَقَذَفْنَٰهَا فَكَذَٰلِكَ أَلْقَى ٱلسَّامِرِىُّ﴿٨٧

Translation (Sahih International)

They said, "We did not break our promise to you by our will, but we were made to carry burdens from the ornaments of the people [of Pharaoh], so we threw them [into the fire], and thus did the Samiri throw."

Word-by-word meaning

قَالُوا۟qālūThey said

أَخْلَفْنَاakhlafnāwe broke
مَوْعِدَكَmawʿidakapromise to you
بِمَلْكِنَاbimalkināby our will
وَلَـٰكِنَّاwalākinnābut we
حُمِّلْنَآḥummil'nā[we] were made to carry
أَوْزَارًۭاawzāranburdens
مِّنminfrom
زِينَةِzīnatiornaments
ٱلْقَوْمِl-qawmi(of) the people
فَقَذَفْنَـٰهَاfaqadhafnāhāso we threw them
فَكَذَٰلِكَfakadhālikaand thus
أَلْقَىalqāthrew
ٱلسَّامِرِىُّl-sāmiriyuthe Samiri

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

Musa goes to the Appointment with Allah and the Children of Israel succumb to worship the CalfAllah relates what happened when Musa traveled with the Children of Israel after Fir`awn's destruction.فَأَتَوْاْ عَلَى قَوْمٍ يَعْكُفُونَ عَلَى أَصْنَامٍ لَّهُمْ قَالُواْ يَمُوسَى اجْعَلْ لَّنَآ إِلَـهًا كَمَا لَهُمْ ءَالِهَةٌ قَالَ إِنَّكُمْ قَوْمٌ تَجْهَلُونَإِنَّ هَـؤُلآء مُتَبَّرٌ مَّا هُمْ فِيهِ وَبَـطِلٌ مَّا كَانُواْ يَعْمَلُونَ-(And they came upon a people devoted to some of idols.
