Verse 84of 111

وَتَوَلَّىٰ عَنْهُمْ وَقَالَ يَٰٓأَسَفَىٰ عَلَىٰ يُوسُفَ وَٱبْيَضَّتْ عَيْنَاهُ مِنَ ٱلْحُزْنِ فَهُوَ كَظِيمٌۭ﴿٨٤

Translation (Sahih International)

And he turned away from them and said, "Oh, my sorrow over Joseph," and his eyes became white from grief, for he was [of that] a suppressor.

Word-by-word meaning

وَتَوَلَّىٰwatawallāAnd he turned away
عَنْهُمْʿanhumfrom them
وَقَالَwaqālaand said
يَـٰٓأَسَفَىٰyāasafāAlas, my grief
عَلَىٰʿalāover
يُوسُفَyūsufaYusuf
وَٱبْيَضَّتْwa-ib'yaḍḍatAnd became white
عَيْنَاهُʿaynāhuhis eyes
مِنَminafrom
ٱلْحُزْنِl-ḥuz'nithe grief
فَهُوَfahuwaand he (was)
كَظِيمٌۭkaẓīmuna suppressor

Commentary (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

Allah's Prophet Ya`qub receives the Grievous NewsAllah's Prophet Ya`qub repeated to his children the same words he said to them when they brought false blood on Yusuf' shirt,بَلْ سَوَّلَتْ لَكُمْ أَنفُسُكُمْ أَمْرًا فَصَبْرٌ جَمِيلٌ(Nay, but your own selves have beguiled you into something. So patience is most fitting (for me).
