Prophet 4 of 25

هود

Hud

Prophet to the People of 'Ad

Sent to the powerful nation of 'Ad, Hud warned them to abandon arrogance and worship Allah alone (Surah Hud 11:50-60).

The Mighty Nation of 'Ad

The people of 'Ad were known for their extraordinary physical strength, towering buildings, and material prosperity. Allah describes them in Surah Al-Fajr as those of Iram — 'the like of whom had not been created in the land' (Surah Al-Fajr 89:7-8). Yet their power made them arrogant. They built monuments on every high place for amusement and constructed fortified structures as though they would live forever (Surah Ash-Shu'ara 26:128-129).

Hud's Clear and Direct Message

Hud (peace be upon him) delivered a straightforward message: 'O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him' (Surah Al-A'raf 7:65). He asked them for no payment, no political allegiance — only that they recognise their Creator. He reminded them that Allah had given them their strength and wealth, and asked them to seek His forgiveness so that He might increase them further (Surah Hud 11:52).

The Arrogant Response

The chiefs of his people said: 'We see you in foolishness, and we think you are a liar' (Surah Al-A'raf 7:66). Their pride blinded them. They asked: 'Who is mightier than us in strength?' not realising that Allah who created them was far mightier (Surah Fussilat 41:15). They challenged Hud to bring the punishment he warned them about, showing contempt rather than reflection.

Surah Al-A'raf 7:66

Destruction by a Relentless Wind

Allah sent upon 'Ad a furious, barren wind that lasted seven nights and eight days (Surah Al-Haqqah 69:6-7). It destroyed everything by the command of its Lord, leaving nothing visible except their ruined dwellings. The same strength they boasted of could not protect them against Allah's decree. Hud and the believers were saved, while 'Ad was erased as though they had never existed (Surah Hud 11:58-60).

Lessons from Prophet Hud

1

Physical strength, wealth, and engineering achievements mean nothing without gratitude to the One who granted them.

2

Arrogance is a barrier to truth — it prevents people from hearing sincere advice.

3

Civilisations rise and fall by Allah's will; no nation is too powerful to be held accountable.

4

A prophet's duty is to deliver the message clearly, not to force acceptance.
