Salih

Prophet to the People of Thamud

Sent to the people of Thamud, Salih brought them a miraculous she-camel as a sign, but they defied Allah (Surah Hud 11:61-68).

Thamud — Successors of 'Ad

The people of Thamud came after 'Ad and were similarly blessed with resources. They carved magnificent homes out of mountains and enjoyed fertile lands (Surah Al-A'raf 7:74). Salih (peace be upon him) reminded them: 'He produced you from the earth and settled you in it, so ask forgiveness of Him and then repent to Him' (Surah Hud 11:61). Despite witnessing the fate of 'Ad, they repeated the same pattern of denial.

Surah Hud 11:61

The Miraculous She-Camel — A Living Sign

When Thamud demanded a sign, Allah sent a she-camel as a clear miracle (Surah Al-A'raf 7:73). Salih instructed them to leave the camel to graze on Allah's earth and not to harm her, warning that touching her would bring a painful punishment. The she-camel was a test of obedience — simple and clear. Would they respect Allah's sign, or would their arrogance lead them to destroy it?

Surah Al-A'raf 7:73

The Crime of Hamstringing the Camel

The most wicked among them rose up and hamstrung the she-camel (Surah Ash-Shams 91:12). This was not a spontaneous act but a deliberate, collective rejection of Allah's sign. The Quran describes them as defying the command of their Lord (Surah Ash-Shams 91:14). They then dared Salih to bring the punishment, saying: 'Bring us what you promise, if you are truly a messenger' (Surah Al-A'raf 7:77).

Surah Ash-Shams 91:12-14

The Earthquake That Ended Thamud

Salih told them they had three days before the punishment would arrive (Surah Hud 11:65). The blast (sayhah) seized them, and they lay prostrate and lifeless in their homes (Surah Hud 11:67). Salih turned away from them, grieving: 'O my people, I had conveyed to you the message of my Lord and advised you, but you do not like advisors' (Surah Al-A'raf 7:79). Their carved mountain fortresses could not shield them.

Surah Hud 11:67

Lessons from Prophet Salih

1

Clear signs from Allah demand clear obedience — there is no room for negotiating with divine commands.

2

One wicked person's actions can bring ruin upon an entire community that tolerates wrongdoing.

3

Material security — even homes carved in mountains — cannot protect anyone from Allah's decree.

4

A sincere advisor may be rejected, but that does not diminish the truth of the advice.
