A Man of Truth and Patience

The Quran describes Idris (peace be upon him) as a siddiq — a person of truth — and a prophet (Surah Maryam 19:56). He is also counted among those who were patient and steadfast, qualities that earned him entry into Allah's mercy (Surah Al-Anbiya 21:85-86). Though the Quran provides limited narrative detail about his life, the qualities Allah chose to highlight speak volumes about what matters most.

Surah Maryam 19:56

Raised to a High Station by Allah

Allah states that He raised Idris to a high station (Surah Maryam 19:57). Scholars differ on whether this refers to a lofty rank in terms of honour and closeness to Allah, or a physical elevation. Regardless of interpretation, this distinction indicates that Idris held a position of great honour in the sight of Allah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ mentioned meeting Idris in the fourth heaven during the Night Journey (Isra and Mi'raj), as recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari 3207.

Surah Maryam 19:57

Among the Righteous Whom Allah Favoured

Idris is grouped in the Quran with other prophets whom Allah favoured, including Ibrahim, Ismail, and Dhul-Kifl (Surah Al-Anbiya 21:85-86). This grouping places him in the company of those known for extraordinary patience, devotion, and perseverance. Early scholars such as Ibn Kathir mention that Idris was among the earliest to call people to righteousness and to teach writing and knowledge.
