A Unique Name Chosen by Allah
Yahya (peace be upon him) holds a unique distinction: Allah Himself named him before he was born. 'O Zakariya, indeed We give you good tidings of a boy whose name will be Yahya. We have not assigned to any before him that name' (Surah Maryam 19:7). The name Yahya, meaning 'he lives,' was unprecedented — no one in history had borne it before. This divine naming indicated the special role and status Yahya would hold.

Wisdom Granted in Childhood
Allah commanded: 'O Yahya, hold fast to the Scripture' — and He gave him judgement (hukm) while he was still a child (Surah Maryam 19:12). This is not ordinary intelligence; hukm in this context refers to wisdom, understanding of divine law, and the ability to make sound judgements. While other children played, Yahya was already engaged in scholarship and worship. He was described as 'confirming a word from Allah, a leader, chaste, and a prophet from among the righteous' (Surah Ali 'Imran 3:39).

Compassion and Purity of Character
Allah describes Yahya as having been given tenderness (hananan) from Allah and purity (zakah). He was devout and dutiful to his parents, and was neither arrogant nor disobedient (Surah Maryam 19:13-14). These qualities paint the portrait of a young man whose inner life was entirely oriented toward Allah. His compassion was not weakness — it was a divine gift that made him effective as a prophet and leader.

Peace on the Day of Birth, Death, and Resurrection
Allah granted Yahya a threefold peace: 'Peace be upon him the day he was born, the day he dies, and the day he is raised alive' (Surah Maryam 19:15). These three moments — birth, death, and resurrection — are the most significant transitions any soul experiences. Allah's specific blessing at each of these junctures shows the completeness of Yahya's honour and protection.
