Guardian of Maryam — Witnessing Allah's Provision
Zakariya (peace be upon him) was appointed the guardian of Maryam (Mary), the mother of Isa. Every time he entered her chamber, he found provision already there. When he asked where it came from, she said: 'It is from Allah. Indeed, Allah provides for whom He wills without account' (Surah Ali 'Imran 3:37). Seeing this miraculous provision for Maryam awakened something in Zakariya — if Allah can provide for her like this, perhaps He would answer an impossible prayer.

A Private Prayer from an Aging Heart
Zakariya called to his Lord in a private supplication: 'My Lord, indeed my bones have weakened, and my head has filled with white hair, and never have I been in my supplication to You, my Lord, unhappy' (Surah Maryam 19:4). He feared for what would happen to the faith of his people after him and asked for an heir who would carry the legacy of Yaqub's family (Surah Maryam 19:5-6). This du'a is remarkable for its intimacy, humility, and trust.

Allah's Answer — A Son Named Yahya
Allah responded: 'O Zakariya, indeed We give you good tidings of a boy whose name will be Yahya. We have not assigned to any before him that name' (Surah Maryam 19:7). Zakariya was astonished — how could he have a son when his wife was barren and he himself had reached extreme old age? (Surah Maryam 19:8). Allah's response was direct: 'It is easy for Me, for I created you before when you were nothing' (Surah Maryam 19:9).

The Sign of Silence
Allah gave Zakariya a sign: he would not be able to speak to people for three days, though he was physically healthy (Surah Maryam 19:10). During this period, he communicated through gestures and devoted himself to praising Allah morning and evening (Surah Maryam 19:11). The sign of silence was itself an act of worship — three days of being unable to do anything but remember Allah. For Zakariya, the silence was filled with gratitude.
