Departure Before Receiving Permission
Yunus (peace be upon him) was sent to the people of Nineveh. When they refused his message, he left them in anger and frustration before Allah had given him permission to leave (Surah Al-Anbiya 21:87). He boarded a ship, and when a storm arose, lots were drawn, and Yunus was cast into the sea (Surah As-Saffat 37:140-141). His departure was a moment of human impatience — understandable, yet it carried consequences.

Swallowed by the Whale — Darkness Within Darkness
A great fish swallowed Yunus, and he found himself in layers of darkness — the darkness of the fish's belly, the darkness of the deep sea, and the darkness of the night (Surah Al-Anbiya 21:87). In that overwhelming isolation, with no human help possible, he turned to the only One who could hear him. This moment of absolute helplessness became the setting for one of the most powerful prayers in the entire Quran.

The Du'a of Yunus — A Prayer for Every Trial
From the belly of the whale, Yunus called out: 'There is no deity except You; glory be to You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers' (Surah Al-Anbiya 21:87). This prayer combines three elements: affirming Allah's oneness (tawhid), glorifying Him (tasbih), and acknowledging one's own fault (itiraf). Allah responded: 'We saved him from distress, and thus do We save the believers' (Surah Al-Anbiya 21:88). The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said no Muslim who makes this du'a will have it go unanswered (Sunan at-Tirmidhi 3505).

A City That Believed — The Exception in Prophetic History
After Yunus's rescue, the people of Nineveh represent a unique case in the Quran: an entire city that believed after initially rejecting their prophet. Allah says: 'Was there any city that believed and its faith benefited it, except the people of Yunus? When they believed, We removed from them the punishment of disgrace in worldly life and gave them provision for a time' (Surah Yunus 10:98). Their repentance was accepted because it was sincere and came before the punishment was final.
